# Content marketing freshman worksheet

Utah CTE Digital Marketing • Ten short activities • Complete in Google Docs

**Name:** \[type here\] **Class:** \[type here\]

## Start here

Open your own copy in Google Docs. Replace \[type here\] with your answers. **One sentence or a few bullet points is enough** unless a task gives a length. Your teacher will guide the reading and videos. No printing or new social media accounts are needed.

**Content marketing** means making useful or entertaining content that helps people get to know a business. Think: a helpful guide, an interesting video, or a list of good resources.

Your job: study real examples, then make two short posts for the fictional business at the end of this worksheet.

## Lesson 1 Why would someone watch or read this

Look at [REI’s Hiking for Beginners guide](https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/hiking-for-beginners.html), especially “Choose Your Hiking Gear.” Watch the first minute of [Blendtec’s Will It Blend? iPhone video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg1ckCkm8YI). Watch the demonstration; do not try it.

1. What useful thing can a beginner learn from REI’s guide? **Answer:** \[type here\]
2. What makes the Blendtec video interesting? **Answer:** \[type here\]
3. Pick one example. How could it make someone interested in that business? **Answer:** \[type here\]

## Lesson 2 Who is the content for

Skim [Visit Utah’s How to Stargaze guide](https://www.visitutah.com/articles/how-to-stargaze). Look for advice about timing, darkness, and taking kids.

**Audience** means the people a piece of content is trying to reach.

1. Choose an audience this guide could help: a beginner, a family, or a photographer. **My choice:** \[type here\]
2. Find one tip that would help that audience. Explain why. **Answer:** \[type here\]

## Lesson 3 How does content spread

Look at the pictures in [Spotify’s 2023 Wrapped announcement](https://newsroom.spotify.com/2023-11-29/wrapped-user-experience-2023/). Wrapped turns someone’s listening habits into results they can share. You do not need a Spotify account.

1. Why might someone share their Wrapped results with friends? **Answer:** \[type here\]
2. Match each example below to **owned, earned, or paid**. **Answers:** \[type here\]

* **Owned:** a business uses its own website or account. **Earned:** someone else shares or talks about it without being paid. **Paid:** a business pays for a placement or promotion.
* A: A shop puts a guide on its own website.
* B: A customer shares that guide with friends without payment.
* C: The shop buys an ad to promote that guide.

## Lesson 4 Let customers join in

Watch the first minute of [GoPro’s HERO11 Million Dollar Challenge video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VfW6-1DM8Y). GoPro selected customer-submitted clips for this video and rewarded the selected creators.

**User-generated content (UGC)** is content made by customers or other users.

1. What can a customer’s video show about a GoPro camera? **Answer:** \[type here\]
2. Write a friendly invitation asking customers to share a photo of their hiking gear. Ask permission to repost it and offer to credit them. No risky activities. **Invitation:** \[type here\]

## Lesson 5 When a creator promotes a brand

Read the opening of [Dunkin’s 2020 announcement about “The Charli”](https://news.dunkindonuts.com/news/the-charli-dances-onto-the-dunkin-menu). Charli D’Amelio was a popular TikTok creator who partnered with Dunkin.

1. Why might Dunkin want to reach Charli’s fans? **Answer:** \[type here\]
2. Imagine a creator gets a free gear rental in exchange for a video. Write one sentence they could say in the video so viewers know about the deal. **Disclosure:** \[type here\]

**Helpful rule:** a free product can be a connection viewers need to know about. The [FTC’s disclosure guide](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/disclosures-101-social-media-influencers) explains this.

## Lesson 6 AI and trust

Find the written AI promise on [Dove’s Keep Beauty Real page](https://www.dove.com/us/en/campaigns/purpose/keep-beauty-real.html). Focus on what the brand promises, rather than judging anyone’s appearance.

1. How could this promise help people trust Dove? **Answer:** \[type here\]
2. Which idea is okay **after a person checks it**, and which should be rejected? Give a short reason for each. **Answers:** \[type here\]

* A: Use AI to suggest titles for an article based on real facts.
* B: Use AI to invent a happy customer and their review.

## Lesson 7 AI helps and people check

Your teacher will show an AI example. You do not need your own account.

1. This sentence contains made-up promises: “Wasatch Weekend costs only $9 and guarantees a safe hike.” Rewrite it using only the business facts below. **My version:** \[type here\]
2. Make **one simple Google Slide about a content creator’s job**. Add three boxes: “How AI could help,” “What could go wrong,” and “What a person must check.” Put one short example in each box. Add this [Google guidance link](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/using-gen-ai-content) as your source. **Slide link:** \[type here\]

## Lesson 8 Make two short posts

Use the business brief below. Work alone or with a partner, as your teacher directs. Keep both posts in this Doc.

1. **Original post:** write 50–80 words that help a first-time hiker. Use your own words and checked facts. End by inviting the reader to ask about a gear rental. **Post:** \[type here\]
2. **Curated post:** recommend two helpful resources. Paste each real link and write one sentence explaining why a beginner should use it. This is a list of recommendations, not copied articles. **Resource 1:** \[type here\] **Resource 2:** \[type here\]

You can use [REI’s beginner guide](https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/hiking-for-beginners.html) and the [National Park Service’s Ten Essentials](https://www.nps.gov/articles/10essentials.htm). Link to the sources instead of copying their pictures or text.

## Lesson 9 Did the content help the business

**These numbers are made up for class.** The business wants people to ask about renting gear.

* Post A: 300 views; 5 people ask about renting.
* Post B: 150 views; 12 people ask about renting.

1. Which post better meets this goal? Use a number to explain. **Answer:** \[type here\]
2. Ask a classmate to read your two posts. What would make them more useful or clear? Make one improvement. **What I changed:** \[type here\]

## Lesson 10 Share your idea

Give a **60-second explanation** of who your posts help, what they offer, and what you want the reader to do. Show your two posts.

1. Which real example gave you an idea for your own content? **Answer:** \[type here\]
2. What was one thing you checked or improved before sharing? **Answer:** \[type here\]

## Business brief Wasatch Weekend

**This business is fictional.** Use these classroom facts:

* Wasatch Weekend rents daypacks and trekking poles in Salt Lake City.
* The audience is adults who are planning their first local day hike.
* The posts should be friendly and helpful.
* The goal is to get readers to ask about renting gear.

Prices, an address, and safety promises are not supplied. Do not make them up. Your teacher may provide a different business or school club instead. Everything stays in class; you do not need to publish it.

## Ready to turn in

* I answered the short lesson questions.
* I made the three-box AI slide in Lesson 7 and pasted its link.
* I wrote one original post and a resource post with two real links.
* I checked my facts and made one improvement after feedback.

**What counts:** useful ideas, clear writing, real sources, and careful checking. Fancy designs and long answers are not required.
